    I like military wool surplus.....blankets, shirts, pants..etc.

But, just because it is military surplus, doesn't mean it is any good. It cracks me up when someone says "If it is good enough for the troops..." There is a lot of military surplus that is just junk.

I do use some milsup gear, but prefer to buy it, after looking at it at my favorite milsurp store....besides the owners wife makes homemade horseradish.

I like it too but I keep remembering that the low bidder got the contract.

There is one, very large, musty old warehouse that all surplus must be shipped to. It's part of the universal contract or something because all that stuff smells the same when you get it.

Indeed. I think it's located in Armpit, MS...

Ahhhhh some of my earliest memories of sleep outs were on the waxy, musty, sweaty, chicken feather mummy bags and shelter half tents (more water proof than the Red Ryder tent).....That is/was.......Surviving!

Did I even mention my "Jungle Hammock w/tent cover and mosquito netting....from the back of a Popular Mechanics magazine?
That really had it's own "atmosphere".

The only time I have slept in a shelter half was for 2 nights in basic training......in Georgia.....in July. Needless to say...it was not comfortable. I ended up sleeping the rest of the night in the fox hole...under the stars.

My second favorite Army Surplus item is canteens with canvas cover, and cups. I have bought over a twenty sets in the last ten years, because I keep giving them away or losing them. Those are tied with Jerry cans. I love Jerry cans, their tough and reliable - the only gas can I use.

This one sound weird, but I know people will agree with me. Socks. US Army surplus socks are great for hiking.

That smell is Kerosene. It's a cheap way to disinfect stuff that can't be cleaned in a washing machine.

When I was in the army, I bought civilian hiking socks to replace the issued ones. Civilian hiking socks are much better.

That smell is mildew. I've come to believe there are only 3 smells authorized by the military. They are B.O., smelly feet and mildew. Every other smell must be requisitioned.
