How many of you make your own flint @ steel fire kits?

I make my own kits, flint and steel being only one of the fire starting methods I have in them (4 minimum methods for me).

No arguments here. Here's a pic of the contents of one of my fire kits. Not pictured, but another great tool for one handed use (in case of injury) is the Blast Match (flint/steel/spring/housing)

My fire kit consists of a 30lbs propane tank and a welders striker. I'm not kidding.

You guys amaze me.

I'm not one of those gram weenies when it comes to backpacking, but I draw the line at a 30 gallon propane tank.

I guess thats difference between what you guys do for serious fun and me homesteading on an acreage. Being an avid cigar smoker a zippo or two is always at hand away from the farm truck or tractors.

Mine is made out of steel trap spring and a piece of chert, and it works great.

Both of you buys have nice kits. Mine looks a lot more like Crash's. Does the fire piston have a rubber gasket inside? If so, do you carry spares? I've never gone with a fire piston because the gasket seems like a fail point to me. Just my thoughts. I could be wrong.

ok bragg finally something we can talk about, a zippo is a good choice of fire making, but lets look at what this website is about wilderness survival, learning to be prepared in the wilds and learning and owning alternate methods of using available materials to ensure survival, i used to carry a zippo actually two of them but my super hero as you calle dhim has given me skills to be able to use what is around me to survive, lets say you are snowmobiling or atving out way out inthe bush and you break through the ice or your vehicle breaks down now you are very cold and or wet how will you light your zippo when mechanical functions of your fingers start to deteriorate it is easier to you your hands holding firesteel or flint and steel to start a fire, now if my zippo works and has enough fuel in it then i will use it in a life threatening situation but what happens if all my gear fails then what/. now i know some think they are better than that but for the other realists and you seem to pride yourself in being a realist then learn and own the skills that may one day save your life.

I agree with you 100%, thats why I'm here. We all have different interests that float our boat. I mean there is no way in he77s half acre I will be making a bone knife or carving a wooden spoon. That is his thing (and very talented by the way). BUT, using flint and steel to start a fire (welders striker) I'm interested in learning.

well go practice starting a fire with a welders stricker and post how that works out for ya, i personally have not been succsessful it does not throw a hot enough spark and also it is to bukly to be carried i carry the swedish fire steel on my belt as you all know and start several fires a week with different materials to gain proficiency, but if ya want or need something man made the fire steel is compact and extremley effective, had mine for two years now and heavily used for the last year and still works great. next year is friction fire

Yes that is one of my fire pistons it is an awesome fire starter even left soaking in water for a day it will produce a coal first try usually with chaga. It has a rubber o ring gasket I also have a string gasket piston I like the added firestarting option in my kit.
