    Default Water filer idea

I was at a flea market today and had an "Ah-Ha!" moment. Was checking out a few tools when I saw these bins filled with smaller fuel filters that are clear plastic with a paper insert. These are the filters used on mowers, tractors, mopeds, etc. I was inspecting one and thought, "this would be easy to hook up to a few hoses to filter out particles and sediment for water". My only concern would be that the filters may contain something not safe to consume. Anybody know more on the possibilities?

FYI, I'd still purify the water after the filtering.

Guess it would depend on the particles you are filtering out and how quickly they would foul the filter.

You can buy .1 micron filter paper. I think it is for diesel fuel, but not positive. The question is, can you do it for less than $20?

    Seems like re-inventing the wheel.....
I can see how it might work but could tell what the results would be compared to those on the market.

I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel. Just trying to make it cheaper! Two filters for $3 and $7 dollars worth of tubing and I'd have two set ups for $5 each. My thought was to use the hose as a siphon, placing a filter inline to take care of the "chunks and grit". After that, it could be boiled or chem treated to kill the bacteria.

My only concern is if there are any harmful chemicals in the filter itself.

Since the water will be treated after the "big chunks" are removed........and......you will be introducing cold water through the filter - I don't think there will be an issue. Can't be any worse than the bandanna that I use to remove the big chunks.

Am I mistaken or do fuel filters block water and prevent it from entering the engine? I thought the filters were small enough to prevent water but pass fuel. Perhaps I'm wrong.

I can see trying one out in a "just in case, use what you have".......would be interesting......I know of what you speak, I have them in line on the tractor.
I'm thinking the moisture drops down in the glass as it's heavier that fuel....Hummm
