Thread: New Alaska cabin builder

    Default New Alaska cabin builder

My name is Nick. I am on several other sites and found this while looking at cabin pictures online. My wife and I purchased land in Alaska years ago and last year began the process of building a cabin. Really all I have done is determine the location and then cleared it and cut down the trees for the cabin.
This winter I have built a scale model of the cabin, what a great idea! I have learned a lot and spent less than $100 for the experience. I will try to post some pics of it later today. Anyway, here I am!

Welcome from Ester, AK. What area is your cabin in? That's pretty exciting.
Why do I live in Alaska? Because I can.

Thank you all. My land is near Healy, just North of Denali natl park.

We purchased the land from the state through the OTC program.

We have been to the site about a dozen times. I have a difficult time expressing how happy I am with it.

Whereas I purchased it online, sight unseen, I was concerned it may be a bog or a graveyard for army corps equipment.

I spent months searching the available parcels. I wanted state land on two sides and water on or near the property.

I also wanted to be able to access the property in a vehicle. This was my second choice.

My first choice was no longer available by the time I placed a bid, so i bid on this one and finally, I was an owner of 'my piece of Alaska'!

It took me two long years to get the cash together to bring my whole family up to see the land for the first time. It was with great excitement and not a little fear that we approached our first landmark.

I think a mosquito may have flown into my eye soon after we established where our land was because it just kept tearing!
We spent most of two days exploring the property and then went fishing down on the peninsula.

    Now I have 10 posts, I'm Golden!!

This is the foundation for my model. It represents about 10 hours of work(joy!)

This is when the walls are nearing completion.
Notice I have chosen a butt and pass design. I have dozens of brads in place of where the rebar pins would be.

Here all of the walls are complete, the ends are on and the rafters for the loft are in place. Even did some chinking too!

This is my little staircase I built using a simple little jig. I decided on stairs rather than a ladder because we are getting old and I am getting fat.

This is a couple of views of the completed project. I chose to leave it in this condition to allow a good look inside at my work. I did learn a lot from this exercise. Some things you just cannot imagine could be a problem until you encounter it. Better to encounter it at the kitchen table in Idaho than in the Alaskan bush.
