I saw that. Checked out a bunch of the categories. Under Iron work they have lots of different styles of flint strikers. There's lots of neat stuff to look at.

If it lasts a reasonable time without refrigeration it might be worth it. Can't wait for a review.

Ya'll know there's a reason we invented refrigeration right? All that salt pork is...well....salty.

.......yeah, and when the SHTF, EMP, Zombie hoard, mother nature, or certain political party's destroy the power grid.....?

I can recall a couple of hunting trips w/MF/uncle....that they were cutting something off a piece of something wrapped in greasy brown paper, soaking it awhile, and frying it up with eggs and biscuits....and coffee you could stand up a spoon in.....

I'm thinking that was what it was........

I did a couple of camping trips like that when I was a wee lad. Saltiest ****** stuff I ever put in my mouth. But when you're out like that you can eat just about anything. These days anything with salt sets off an alarm at my doctor's office.

You are supposed to cut off the portion you want to cook, then rinse the meat in cool water to extract as much salty flavor as you need.

I was thinking a cold water (or milk) soak to remove some of the salt. Ran across this - haven't tried it. http://www.kitchenbutterfly.com/how-to/de-salt-bacon/

You know what's really, really good? Taking a slab of bacon (with rind still on) scoring it, skewering it, and slow-roasting it over an open fire until it starts dripping. Drip the smoky, delicious grease onto a slice of thick bread. Serve with crisped slices of bacon and slices of fresh tomato, cucumber, green peppers, radishes on the side. I am Hungarian and the 'bacon-grease bread' was a common staple of shepherds out in the fields back home. Oh it is HEAVEN.

Crash, thanks for the link....gonna give it a try.

Last summer at the Rondy, was kinda hanging with some Rodgers Rangers...(actually got drafted, had something to do with rum ration)....anyway.....one of the displays is a haversack with a Ranger's rations....including a hunk of salt cured bacon.

They have been hauling it around, (with the beans, parched corn and other stuff) for 10+ years as a display.
Guy claimed it was still good, even though it looked like it was made of painted plaster...so we will see.

I don't have a refrigeration problem if bacon is handy.

So it showed up today....gonna have to figure a way to cut off a hunk....as the rind is hard as a rock and hard to cut.

Really smells good.......Even Bella (new dog) thinks so...she has been following me around.......
