Thread: Are all saps created equal?

How does the sap that comes from tapping a maple tree compare to sap in fatwood? Can sap be tapped from a tree to be used in fire starting?

As far as I know only sap from pines will work. The sap from other trees doesn't contain the oils or turpentine, it's basically sugar.

Hi all, first post. Has anyone ever messed with the sap from mesquites? I ask because I read all these cool techniques and such but living in west (I call it central) Texas pretty much the only trees I have to work with are mesquite and some live oak. I was thinking of getting some of the sap/resin because I've been watching Ray Mears Bushcraft recently and saw him make an adhesive with resin and I recall hearing that the resin could be used to light fires. Thought I'd get some mesquite resin/sap and see how it worked compared to pine.

I've got no experience with mesquite resin, but found this blog that may be helpful to you. http://woodsroamer.blogspot.com/2012...od-things.html

I've often wondered if the sap/pitch from a cherry tree could be used in some useful manner.

Awesome article thanks crash. I knew of it's antiseptic qualities and the beans being good to eat (used to chew on them during the summertime) but I wasn't sure about the sap.

Tapped my pine tree with a spigot and I also notched it. So far nothing. There is some sap on some broken branches but nothing on my notches or tapper. Tree has 6 inch trunk. Only been 24 hrs. Think I'll get any or should I go out to the game land and do a big 'un?

Maple trees that are tapped for sap are tapped in the spring of the year when the tree is sending sap up from the roots to the limbs for this years growth.....need cold night temps and warm sunny days.

Pine sap run to a wound, so bigger scarring is used.
Found this pic on the interweb....example of tree tapped for turpentine.

I wondered why there is a question about a sap. Well, it's like a blackjac...... Oh, nevermind.
