Submitted by swoodard on Mon, 2014-07-28 16:24
FAIRBANKS- Biologists with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game are warning residents in the Goldhill area of a confirmed bear sighting.
At least two different people called into Fish and Game last evening reporting the bear, both within a half mile radius.
One resident reported the same bear, an adult Grizzly, entered into his yard twice.
Biologists say their main concern at this point is to keep the community informed and alert that this bear is around that area.
They warn that it is important to keep garbage put away, any sort of bird or animal feed, and to report the bear if it is seen.
We spoke to Tony Hollis, a biologist with Fish and Game, about the safety of the area.
He said, "It could become dangerous of course. If this bear gets conditioned to human food and just starts rummaging through human food it could become a problem yes."
He continued on the importance of reporting any sightings of the bear saying, "We will try to locate where he is going to be. If we try to chase him right now it will just be a game of cat and mouse."

Dang it, he just came through my yard apparently. I live smack dab between Chena Ridge and Goldhill Rd.
Walking the dog on Sat.FAIRBANKS — A grizzly bear that showed up in two yards on Goldhill Road Sunday night might be the same one that was seen on Chena Ridge a couple weeks ago and biologists are warning area residents to keep an eye out for it.
"I'm assuming it might be the same bear," wildlife biologist Tony Hollis at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in Fairbanks said. "Chena Ridge is just across the Parks Highway and up a hill."
Two residents on Goldhill Road called ADF&G on Monday to report that a grizzly bear came into their yards Sunday night, about a mile up the road from Sheep Creek Road Extension.
A man said the bear ripped open a door on his dog truck and a woman said the bear bit into three garbage cans and scattered garbage around her yard. There's a good chance it's the same bear that was reported on Chena Ridge about two weeks ago, Hollis said.
That bear showed up at the same house twice in the same night and the homeowner got pictures of it. The bear didn't cause any problems or pose a threat and ADFG didn't receive any further reports.
"If it's the same bear, now it's getting into a little trouble," Hollis said.
Judging from the pictures and tracks he saw of the bear on Chena Ridge, Hollis said the bear is "decent size."
"It's not a little tiny one, that's for sure," he said. "A young adult is what I think it is."
Hollis advised area residents to keep their eyes and ears open and to be "bear prepared" by cleaning up garbage, removing bird feeders, securing outdoor freezers, cleaning barbecue grills and keeping pet or livestock feed indoors.
Anyone who sees a bear in the area is asked to call Fish and Game at 459-7206.
"Call us and let us know so we can keep track of where it's at in case we have to go out and look for it," Hollis said.

First time on the Chena with the canoe. I ended up having to sit down in it instead of on the seat since I didn't have any gear or kids with me. It was too light for the seat. I was able to change positions a few time just fine. All in all though, great trip. Saw no one else on the river since when I started off it was misty rain. My friend Lori came and helped me at the end to shuttle me back to my vehicle and took a picture.

Looks like a good trip.
That's a nice river for paddling. I like to kneel in the middle best. Geat for the shoulders eh!
I'm not as sore as I thought I would be. Must be that fiddle playing working the shoulders muscles.

Dang it, that pesky grizzly is still around and I leave on Thurs. for the Women's Salmon Derby in Valdez. My kids are staying here with my daughter spending several nights with friends. Scat and tracks were seen around a cabin today not half mile from my house. The grizzly season opens on the 10th so I doubt that sucker will be around by the time I get back.

Just got back from the women's silver salmon derby in Valdez. Got totally skunked. Boo, no fish at ALL. Had a great time though and ended the trip with a zipline adventure near Talkeetna.
Finishing ground school.

Looks like a fun time.
More pictures from my vacation. Valdez, Prince William Sound, the fish hatchery, Hatchers Pass, Worthington Glacier (and others), hiking, camping, etc. Wrangell St. Elias Mountains, Talkeetna Mountains, Chugiak Mountains, The Alaska Range. I think I am finally getting a good handle on my camera (which has no automatic settings at all). I'm shooting mostly in Aperture Priority.

Looks like you had fun! Its been many years since I've been to Valdez, but it is a beautiful place. I did go on a caving expedition to the Wrangell ST. Elias mountains in 2008, that was an awesome trip. Nice pictures, I'd say you are certainly getting the hang of your camera! I especially like the one with the fireweed. Our fireweed down here is almost gone...
