With chest waders....you start getting in too deep, getting closer to the head....one tends to back off a tad....or at least poke the ground in front of you, with a stick...... to see how deep it really is.
But that is just me........

I've fished just about every damp spot in CO and WY and I never heard or thought of snaring the little beggars.
Does this qualify?

You just have to look for tunnels in the water. Those are generally fish runs and the best place to put the snare.

So OK, getting back to survival stories....hip boot s were brought up......This is the reason.
Duck hunting on a small brushy island, no boat back then....but had hip boots.
Shot a duck, it was drifting by, no dog< so went after it, got almost to it, and was getting deep...stopped and reached for it....boot one filled with water, (got the duck)...tried to step back (kinda panicy....freakin cold)...boot two goes under, and almost fell...but made it back....muddy bottom didn't help any......
Back on the island, stripped off boots pants and drawers......now I'm, really f******* cold......
Hung up drawers pants, socks in bushes, and built a small fire to dry them out some.......sat in my canvas decoy bag with spare dry sock on (wool) till everything dried.
Actually worked pretty well....till I would stand up to shoot.....The guys said, "Just sit there, OK?"....LOL
So OK maybe not exactly life threating....but more than a little uncomfortable...
So the morel to this story....have fire making stuff with you, and canvas decoys bags are much warmer than the new mesh ones...and Oh yeah.....be careful how deep you go with hip boots on.

Are you talking about the flood? Yes, I made it through that. Estes park's roads are open and during my stay in the woods I had to move my tipi to higher ground. I was not on longs peak but in the woods at its base.
Hunter, waders ain't going to cut it.

Summer camp, Cook Springs, Al. hiking up a trail to go to the top of a small mountain/very big hill. The group I was with got ahead of me, so I thought I would take a short cut. The trail is wooded going up, my short cut took me to the rocky side. So, I kept going very sure of myself till I was on a very narrow ledge. I was at the point of laying against the rock so I wouldn't freak-out. Had to make a choice, keep climbing ( had no climbing skills, only 14yrs old ) or inch my way back down. It took me about an hour in half to get in that position and about three hours to get back to camp. Learn many lessons that day, backtracking down a mountain side wasn't that easy
I'd have to say from the book, "Escape from Lucania". I was going to say from the book, "The Long Walk" (not the Stephen King one) but I just read that it was disproven. I was kind of sad/angry about that.
Can I change my choice? Just got done reading "Touching The Void", and it is hands down the most dramatic survival story I have ever read.
