    Default Hello from alaska

    Hello all,

I have been a flight nurse in Alaska for over three years now. I consider myself a newbie to this realm. Although I am comfortable with my medical knowledge, I would love to learn from anyone. I am a hunter and outdoorsman but would like to gain more knowledge. I'm currently interested in more survival training including cold weather survival, advanced navigational skills, self sufficiency including plant knowledge and primitive plant medicine.

I intend to start acquiring as much theoretical knowledge as I can but nothing beats hands on experience.

Anyone interested? I am sure I can also acquire a few classes within more organization to supplement an income if you are interested in teaching a larger survival class. Other than that would like to build on my personal goals.

    Thanks

Welcome home. As a flight nurse in Alaska you are in a unique position to NEED survival skills. Should a chopper be forced to land because of mechanical problems and you find yourself well away from any town those skills could be put to the test if in winter, bad weather or even in an overnight situation.

Is there survival gear on the rotor craft?

There is always survival gear in any aircraft here Rick.

Welcome 310. I'm in Fairbanks. Are you in Anchorage? Have you heard of the Becoming an Outdoors Woman classes? They can offer a wide variety of our type of information and are always changing. http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm...reducation.bow

    Welcome.

The reason I asked was because a medivac is pretty jambed full of gear and I didn't know if they even had room. I assume they have a crew of 3 + patient so the amount of gear could add up in close quarters. Then you have to consider both water landings and wilderness landings depending on where she is so I wasn't sure what they could carry.

Thank you all. Yes there is a bag of survival gear on the planes. We travel in fixed wings. So cover the entire state, in the winter, temps can vary by 60 degrees easily from one place to the next. Yes I also carry personal survival gear on me and am self taught for the most part r/t survival. Definitely aware of the extreme situations I/we could be easily placed in. Thus why I figured this would be a great place to see if anyone can help expand the scope of my knowledge and training. Just like nursing it took a lot of education and experience to get here. And I appreciate the info 1st, but I'm looking for much more advanced. There's a lot of military here, there has to be someone around. I'm in both Fairbanks and ANC all the time.

Wasn't really a job offer but if someone was around I'm sure I could bring together a bunch of coworkers or propose to management. Our company doesn't formally offer true survival training and given our location and jobs, I believe it would benefit us all. We have from -60 temps, extreme wet environments, cold with very minimal shelter options, obvious remote, high likelihood of numerous days before located if crash. I could easily go on and on in regards to scenarios. Thus why you are all here attempting to improve my preparedness. And as I said I'm proficient but looking for more

Mea Culpa. I just assumed it was a chopper.

There aren't any scheduled right now but they often offer more advanced classes in the areas you are interested in. Check out Beyond the BOW classes when they are offered. You have to check fairly regularly as different things are offered at different times and it's always changing.

Lol oh. Dang me and my preconceived stereotypes. Sorry. Ok, on the BOW site, go up a level to the fish and game site and they have classes for "everyone". Not exactly what you are looking for but really, occasionally they have some really good stuff going on in the area you are looking for. Yes, I live outside of Ester. I'd love to live up Ester Dome or Murphy Dome. Those are areas I am keeping my eyes open for a place to buy in the next year or so.

Just out of curiosity does the Coast Guard or any of the community colleges offer survival courses up there?
