Default I got offered a scab position...

Just got a call from AMR with a temp 3 week EMT/Paramedic job offer while their guys are on a "strike team". Sounded good but sketchy and secretive. CAlled my buddy on the AMR board of directors asking if he knew anything about it and he said all AMR employees are striking nation wide. Funny that's not what a "strike team" normally means.....

I would really like to make a chunk of change, but I feel like that's a bad move.....

I've had decades of experience with unions. I was a shop steward and an organizer (UFCW) in my college years. In my first few years of practice, the firm I worked for assigned me to represent a number of locals, including police and laborers unions. I later represented management in contract and grievance proceedings with unions. I forged an alliance between a local multi-union labor council and a few Republican Congressmen in opposition to NAFTA.

Unions have an incredible institutional memory, and once an "enemy," always an "enemy."

Is AMR offering you a full-time permanent management/non-union position? Not likely. If you take the job, it's likely you'll be out the door when the contract settles. If not, you'll never fit in with your colleagues once they return to work. Mistakes will always be blamed on you - even those that could cost you your license.

Many of your colleagues will move onto other employers, including municipal fire departments. You will be remembered. Guaranteed. And the paramedic community is a small one regardless of its numbers.

The "cost" of accepting the offer will far outweigh anything you'll ever earn in the few weeks you'll be on the job.

I would be hesitant to step into that role. You certainly aren't going to win any friends with those that are on strike and the potential of violence becomes ever present. Not a good situation at all. As for getting your foot in the door my guess is once the strike is settled you'd be gone and even if you somehow found a slot you'd be working with folks that knew you had crossed their line. Not good. Wouldn't you be better off waiting until they go back to work then talk to your buddy on the board about hiring on?

EDIT: Sorry, Ken. I was writing when you posted.

Thanks Ken, good points. Everyone does know everyone in this seemingly small line of work. I'm new and already run into tons of people I somehow know across the state. Don't want to sign my death cert and forever be known as that guy.....

Had I not called my friend I would have never even known what the deal was. This was thrown at me very sneakily like....

No problem, Rick. I'm sure Randy appreciated hearing from an older and wiser guy in addition to me.

No, no, no..... I meant older than ME! Rick is OLDER THAN ME!

I threw the word "wiser" in so I wouldn't get banned.

You must be talking about shlongs. I hear they are still popular with historical reenactors.
Hunter or Kyrat might could shed some light.

No....no....that's not what I was talking about. I'm pretty sure I know what that is. I hear they are still popular with guys and a lot of women. You might want to look up the definition of that.
