    Default Buffalo Skinner

Here is a buffalo skinner I finished up for a fellow from another forum I play around on, He approached me a few months ago wanting a knife to skin buffalo. I thought why, I figured maybe a select number of people would ever even skin one buffalo in a life time, but not this guy he actually does it quite often.... Since I know nothing about skinning a buffalo I worked with him to produce this knife. I was worried at first and thought it would turn out pretty ugly due to the fact I just couldn't get into the shape and size. But I think it panned out I actually like it we spent quit a bit of time trying to get a good balance on the knife and it turned out pretty light and fast in hand for as large as it is, balance point is just at back edge of bolster not bad. Sheath turned out easier than I thought, but it chewed up enough leather to make a couple regular sheaths...lol.

    11 1/8" total
blade is 6"ish made from 5/32 1095, full flat grind, 300g finish, cooked pretty hard as he is going for edge retention and said he would only skin, not bone, or chop, or pry with it...lol.
handle is a strait grain Ironwood with stainless bolster

What's "ugly" about skinning and processing a buffalo one has killed???

A very handsome knife, by the way.

I do not know, but my absolute favorite meat is Buffalo...Buffalo steak...buffalo burgers....what ever it's good. I tried to work out a partial trade for the knife but for some reason he didn't want to play.....lol.

To pretty to use. Course use is relative I guess. I have a couple of old skinners that my dad used years and years ago (1940's and1950's) when he custom butchered for some of the local farmers. My son says they are to old to use. ( I use em)

    Nice job Randall !

na Ironwood...one of the hardest most stable woods for knife handles...1095hc working mans steel. This guy is a Forman of a large ranch near Guthrie Oklahoma. Part of the ranch supports a Buffalo heard, he hand process several a year. The meat is used at fund raiser events to support the sister ranch called Peppers Ranch, its a foster home ranch that houses foster kids. When I hand the knife over to him I am going to ask if I can visit/help skin the next ones out, sounds like a once in a life time thing to me. Also I will be doing future donations to this ranch if at all possible.

That's a beautiful knife and a lot of belly for skinning. That should work fine. He should be very happy with that.
