Default Greetings from the Raft [Floating away due to Colorado flooding]

    Hello and greetings to everyone.

Been a long time poker of outdorsy things, but recent events have for, whatever reason, gotten me interested in backpack camping and general survival camping as well. I've been camping a lot when I was in school, but now some 10 years later, I'm wishing that I could get back out into the bush where its possible to see the stars again. I've been hunting a few times, but most of my outdoors work has been car-camping with my dad and a single trip out with the 'boys' during a weeklong elk hunt when I was in high-school.

As for general information, I'm a 27 years mature (yea right, just ask my boss) guy, in relatively good health condition. Problem that I have is that I'm working and taking another crack at college, so I don't have enough time to take a whole day and make a trip out into the boonies to practice stuff like plant identification and shelter building. I know there has to be something I can work on during the 3-4 hours I have in mornings before classes, but I need suggestions. So to that whit, I appeal to those of you who are practiced in this stuff. I'm hoping to make a couple of days camping trip over thanksgiving break from school, but being Colorado, there could be quite a bit of snow on the ground too. I've whipped up a basic bug-out-bag style kit to take camping with me. But I know the old saying 'The more you know, the less you have to carry." So far the only thing I've managed to squeeze in is some target practice with a classic style sling I made.

Anyway, I appreciate your input and look forward to chatting with you lot on the forums.

Welcome from Alaska. Where are you going to school? I went to USC in Pueblo. It's since been changed to some other name though.

Going to Front Range Community College right now on the cheap. Gonna transfer to CU Denver for their Pharmacy degree hopefully if I don't lose my mind before then. Hoping some time out in the boonies might help with that.

yea, its just a challenge to get the time off from both work and school at the same time. Got one planned for next weekeend, we will see if the request for time off goes through at work though.

Here's hoping, Friend of mine wants to go this coming weekend. Give me a chance to test run all my gear somewhere where I won't be up s**t creek if I forgot something. Biggest killjoy is that colorado is still banning fires when backcountry hiking, even after the flooding. I suppose another forest fire like last year is probably something worth avoiding to them.

    welcome from Girdwood Alaska.

Love that part of Colorado...not the Denver part, but west, along the Colorado Trail, and over by Aspen. Lots of lakes, and designated campfire rings...are fires allowed in those rings? We had them this summer, up near Steamboat Springs. Long as you use the fire rings that are established, and never leave a fire unattended.
