    First, I have some questions:

Which desert are you stranded in?
How did you get there? Walked in, camel, plane crash, disabled plane, disabled vehicle....
How long were you traveling to get there from the start of the desert?

Without that info, it's difficult to rank some items, but here's an initial order of priority and idea of how each item can help you.

    1. Cosmetic Mirror: for signaling
    2. 1 quart of water each: just know it won't last long
    3. 1 topcoat each: warmth after darkness falls when the temperature drops significantly, protection from wind and blowing sand.
    4. Large plastic raincoat: use for solar still
    5. 4 cell Flashlight: illumination at night, signaling
    6. Red and white parachute: shade from direct sunlight
    7. Knife: essential tool, possible use in food gathering and digging solar still
    8. Pair of sun glasses each: comfort, protection from wind blown sand
    9. .45 caliber pistol: protection, for killing your camel, for signaling
    10. 2 quarts of vodka: short duration signal fire at night
    11. Book of "Edible Animals of the dessert: use as toilet paper
    12. Compress Kit with gauze: helpful if you cut yourself with the knife or shoot yourself in the foot with the .45
    13. Magnetic compass: useless without the info requested above
    14. Sectional Air map of the area: useless without the info requested above
    15. Bottle of salt tablets: useless without water to stay hydrated

I'm afraid there isn't nearly enough information to offer any logical response.
    For example....

    What desert?

    What time of the year?

    Why are the people stranded?

Is anyone in the group familiar with desert survival?

    Is anyone injured?

Does anyone know they're out there "somewhere" and are supposed to be "somewhere else?"

(By the way, today, I can not imagine four people being stranded out in a desert and no one has a cell phone.)

(I just saw Ken beat me to it, but anyway....)

This looks like some kind of take home test.

Hope you got an A there Ken.

All I know is, I'd want to be the one with the .45 (assuming it's loaded. No bullets in that list. If not, I want the knife.)

    Cool Hmmmm....

Take the gun and shoot the others. Use them for food. The water will also last longer. Easy, next question....

why bother ranking the items, most all of them are small items and easy to carry, so it's not like you need to make a decision on what to leave behind.

So, Like... Who are you...How old?....Who's in the desert with you?...Do you like them?...Why/Why not?......Why do you have to rate them?.....Do you have a neck tie?

I think we have to rate it...then he/she?, will argue with the choices.

You have three people...... Take it all. Not enough Info to help with your home work.

How about you give your rating and we will offer suggestions based on your opinion.

Hmmmm I was gonna actually try to do this. But you guys really are right. It is not even fun without some more information. I can better spend my time enjoying the rest of forum and you folks unique sense of family and humor. Well maybe not better but much more enjoyable.

I agree with with Ken pretty much on his ranking. I reckon the parachute could also be used for a lot of handy things. Any shade would be very important close to the Equator and the whole red and white cloth could be made in to panels to use for distress signals for the air search that should be taking place maybe..oh wait I forget we do not know if anyone else knows we are lost.

Servtec 30 I will be glad to play but I really would like a little more info. By the way what exactly is a "top coat"? Is that a great coat or more like a duffel or maybe like a car coat or a pea coat?

Yep - another homework assignment and an individual that wants to be given the answer rather than research it and actually learn something.

I would go with the .45 and vodka, cull the rest.
