    Default Map Coordinates 101

I found a blast from my past! I did a google search after reading Zero's topo map thread and found 2 YouTube videos of the VERY SAME 1966 Army training film I used as part of the search and rescue classes I taught in the '70s and '80s.

For anyone interested, they're well worth watching.

Thanks Ken, I recently became interested in using map and compass after an Orienteering class with a bad instructor. These videos are helpful.

Look at the bright side. You can avoid the swamps and marshes. We couldn't.

But you still had to learn how to use a sextant and a compass and parallel rules, right?

Wouldn't they be a bit difficult to operate under water?

They may want to surface if they get lost.

When I started teaching scouts orienteering, I needed to learn what the UTM grid was, since I was trained in Land Nav from the Army. I used this website to help me.

Although UTM is very close to the military system, there are differences.

I was an Operations Specialist in the Navy. One of our primary purposes is navigation. I know what a sextant is..... never saw one in the navy. The compass we called a gyro. Kinda the same, kinda not. What the heck are parallel rules?????

Yeah, we had multiple GPS on multiple equipment........

Still remember the directions Harrison Ford gave Gene Wilder in the movie "The Frisco Kid" who was wanting to go to the west coast and San Francisco.

Yeah, we had multiple GPS on multiple equipment........
The money spent on navigation onboard a boomer was so that the missiles had an accurate starting point. Without that a moving launch vehicle would never hit their target. A benefit of all that was we got to navigate with it as well. We did have a sextant. Never had to use it for real, but did get to play with it some. Yeah we had a ship's gyro (compass) tied into the dead reckoning system on the primary plotting table. And yep - used parallel rulers ever day along with navigational slide rules and hand held rate bearing computers.

Our GPS and other external fix equipment was used to verify the accuracy of the inertial navigators.

I'm not at the house right now. When I get back, whenever that may be, I'll take a picture of my parallel rules and post it here.

When I was on the Alabama there was a story being done on Submarine Navigation. Here I am with parallel rulers and dividers in hand.

Little did I know that one of the pictures from that shoot would be on display at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in DC. An old shipmate was there a week ago and took this picture.
