Very cool. I used to weave grass mats while camping just for fun. Didn't have a loom and they didn't turn out as nice as this one. But alas, one can't weave tundra....

I'd love to see it after you tie it off and remove it from the loom.

Cool, did you use cattails? Nice and heavy, it would make a decent sleeping mat.

Not cattails, the reeds that have the foxtail instead of the cattail. It is a heavy mat, it would provide good protection from the ground. I've slept on this type of mat many times.

Thanks. I like the idea of it being a good kid project or at least a good demonstration for event school days.

Great job, Phil. That really looks like a very nice mat. Did you sort them to have half the heads on one side and half on the other or did you just toss them in? Looks very even.

That's just slick. It is also big enough to show the visual learner how it operates. Is that for a specific merit badge?

Really neat! I'll pass ikt oln to my darling bride and her sister as they are deeply into alpace fiber processing at all stages including looms. When they were taking a class, they learend to use a loom by making a marvelous Colorado Tartan (yep, it's official, you would be surprised how many registered tartans there are).

Rick, I alternated the bundles to keep the mat even. I used about six reed stocks per bundle.

Sorry, I didn't take a picture of it finished, and I gave the mat away at the presentation. The next time I make one I'll take a picture.
