Default What do you add to store bought Trail Mix or GORP?

Good Old Raisins and Peanuts (GORP), or more commonly known these days as Trail Mix, is a mainstream food item carried on most outdoor trips. There are a great verity of store bought mixes available, more than ever before, and the prices can be quite reasonable. Now I do like to make my own mixes from scratch when time and money permits, but more often than not I purchase a Pre-made mix and doctor it up with a few things I like.

So the question is, what do you add to a store bought trail mix?

One item I've used for many years is Honey Nut Cheerios. They taste good, add a light crunch to the mix, and travel well.

PS: I learned about Cheerios from a 2-year old I shared a meal with while on the trail. His contribution to the meal was a small Ziploc full of Cheerios.

I usually make my own, except for the occasional impulse buy at a gas station cash register when I've had to skip lunch.

A typical blend for me would be pecans, almonds, dried blueberries, dried cherries, dried sweetened cranberries, small bits of dried apricots, apple, and pineapple, plain Cheerios, and a handful of "Honey Bunches of Oats." I preferred "Just Bunches," but they discontinued making them.

I like dried fruit and the occasional M&M.

Mine has to be either all fruit, or all nuts can't be doing with a mixture of the two. I put chocolate chips in the fruit mix and M&M's in the nut mix. Cheerios are already a snack food, but I've never thought of adding them to gorp.

I make my own: Raw almonds, raw walnuts, sunflower seeds, apricot kernels (nutritional powerhouse!)
and various organic unsulphured dried fruit (apricots, raisins, blueberries, etc)

When I have to get a quick something, I don't add anything. Kinda defeats the purpose of expediency.

I like mine to include dry-roasted peanuts, hickory smoked almonds, dried pineapple, mango and papaya, raisins, garlic sesame sticks and those Yorks peppermint pattie/m&m things.

I make my own. This is usually the mix.

    Almonds

    Walnuts

    Cashews

    Dried blueberries/cranberries

    Banana chips

Pending on what's in the bag I usually add banana chips to a store bought trail mix.

Two of my favorite additions to standard GORP is dried pineapple and smoked almonds. The local Mark's stores have a pretty good selection of trail mixes, I'll choose one or two that look good and doctor them up.

I like Winco because they have a very large selection of bulk items, many of which are great for GORP. I mostly have peanuts and sunflower seeds in mine. Those are the cheapest nuts and seeds. Then I add small amounts of other stuff. Raisins, bananas, mango, peanut butter M&Ms, coconut, almonds....etc. It usually ends up about 60-70% peanuts and sunflower seeds with the rest being whatever mixture I feel like at the time. This is usually based on price.
