    Default Eyed Auger

After hours of searching the internet looking for an eyed auger I couldn't find any ware to buy one. So I decided to make my own, this one is just a prototype. I plan to buy a 1" diameter 8" long Irwin auger bit and some thicker pipe to use as the eye. I just threw this one together from some pipe I had laying around and an old auger bit sitting around in a box of junk.

I don't claim to be a good welder but I can stick metal to metal. I had the weld perfect and the I got OCD and tryed to touch up one little spot and blew a hole in the pipe. Then I tried to build up my weld to fill the hole and just made the hole bigger. Trying to weld thin walled tubing with stick is kind of like trying to slice butter with a chainsaw, it can be done but it may end up messy.

Here is some cool camp furniture made with the eyed auger that puts my 10 min stool to shame.

You can google for Scotch Pattern Screw Eyed Augers or Ring Auger Bit. Either one will find them. I know that Irwin Tools carries them. But making them is cheaper.

On the stool. When your legs are spread out that much you place lateral force on the tenon and they will break. If not immediately then over time. You want the legs to be more vertical so the weight is transferred down the length of the leg into whatever surface it is sitting on. 110° is just about perfect. If you can imagine a line running through the center of the leg and another line from the leg hole to the center of the seat bottom. That measurement should be about 110°. It's called the rake angle. Much tougher with a rounded bottom like that though. As an engineering student you'll probably get into rake angles a lot. They are really common and you'll find them on things like the forks of motorcycles, the blades of propellers, saw blade teeth and on and on. You'll most likely cover it in tool geometry.

The three legged stool is probably the easiest to build. Not because it only has three legs but because it will almost always be level no matter what it sits on. A four legged stool can be a pain in the rump to keep it from rocking even on a flat surface. A three legged stool won't rock. Well, I guess you could find a surface to make it rock but it rarely rocks.

    All that aside....great job!!

Thanks for the tips rick, I found the Irwin scotch eyed augers but they are much longer than I'm wanting (18" I believe) I'm wanting a 8"-10" auger. This one is longer than I would like but as I mentioned its a prototype. I figured out the angle was to steep the hard way, it felt week while I was using it and after I finished cooking my dinner and was ready to leave I gave it a good bounce and the back leg snapped. I blame this on 3 reasons, one as mentioned the angle was far to steep, two the auger is only 1/2" so the tenons are going to be weaker than the 1" ones which my next auger will be sized, and three my back leg was a much weaker wood everything else was made of seasoned pecan while the back leg was brush honeysuckle I believe.

I've probably learned as much, if not more, from my failures as I have my successes. I've never tried to make my own augers so I have no advice for that but if you can't find the size wood bit you want or find it too expense then look at Self Feed Bits. Larger diameter wood bits can get pricey.

I picked up a new bit at the local hardware store today, they didn't have any 1" bits but they had a 15/16" bit the length I wanted for $12. I figured I would sacrifice a 1/16" to keep my business local instead of driving all the way to home depot to get one.

I may be paraphrasing a little here but I believe Thomas Edison said "I didn't fail to make a light bulb 3,000 times, I learned how not to make a light bulb 3,000 times"

Those are some nice augers you have there Randy, what diameter is that big sucker in the in the middle?

Randy - I assume that one is for pegging timbers and logs? Pretty cool. I'll bet you can get a sweat up with that one on a cold day.

The big one works great for pegging, I've used it for putting together split rail fence and such. It does work up a sweat but not too bad.

I picked up a couple at flea markets, have them hanging on the wall at "The Place"....pretty good sized, maybe 1 or 1/1/4".

Also have a couple of "Braces w/bits" including a spade bit that adjusts in and out....one had a pipe reamer mounted in it at the moment and is in the threading bucket.

All part of my non power tools selection.

Cool project and is handy to have around.

Yeah, I have a couple of the adjustable bits. I don't use them a lot but they are sure handy when you need one.

    I have a Fray brace
