    Default Nasty Boy ...

Had a run in with this dude Monday. I don't like Copperheads layin' around the place.

I wouldn't want it in my yard either. I'd have to move him to some safer location. Snakes are just to dang beneficial not to protect them. We don't have many around here and the dang chipmunks have run of the place.

If you do move one I'd suggest a 5 gallon bucket with lid. They see in infrared so if you use a cloth sack they can still see you through the sack. If you get a hand too close to the sack they can still nail you.

If you decide to move him, send me a PM and I'll give you my ex-wife's address.

I knew they could see infrared, but it never occurred to me they could 'see' through a sack. Thanks for pointing it out!

Rick where did you hear that?! It's infrared not X ray. Maybe if you put your hand on the bag your heat would transfer to it, but THROUGH that bag??

That's a beautiful snake. I would have to keep it if I ran across it.

He does look healthy, but it also looks like he's flattened his body a lot in defensive mode. He could be scrawny. My pit vipers could make themselves look big when they were tiny.

While i value wildlife and natural balance as much as anyone... i'd much rather deal with a few harmless chipmunks and them gnawing on some garden goods or a wall or some storage bins than be at risk of losing my life (or a family member's) to a very poisonous critter.

Very thankful that Canada has very few native poisonous critters. I'll chose rabid coyotes any day. lol

Copperheads are only mildly venomous, but still nothing to mess with.

They can see the heat signature through the bag Randy. Just because it's opaque to visible light doesn't mean other wave links can't penetrate it. How we see in the world and what blocks our vision is very much different in some animals.

Here's a demonstration using a plastic bag but the principle is the same for cloth.

    HEY!

Yea, I would have chopped his head off with a shovel. Soooo glad we don't have them up here.

Randy is correct, it had flattened because I had moved it out of the weeds with my corn cutter. This snake struck continuously with blinding speed. I've seen a lot of Copperheads, this one was about the most frisky one I ever ran across.
Not nearly as fearsome as some of them readheads though.

Ken or the snake? Careful - you just might make the counselors point for him.

All this talking and nobody's suggested capturing that snake in a hong?

Do they make hongs that small?
