Thread: Heading to Alaska!

    Default Heading to Alaska!

In Two weeks I'll be in Alaska, for the first time.

The Alyeska Resort, located near Girdwood, hired me to cook there this winter. Any tips?

I've got some good layers and winter gear, backcountry skis and serious gloves.

After a winter in Yellowstone, cooking for the Man Camp, the winter can't be Too much colder....

I'm surprised by how small the difference in temperature is between Alaska and many Canadian areas. -49F is -45C and this past winter (a fairly warm, wet one) in Ottawa, Ontario we hit -40C (-40F) this year.

I guess the biggest difference between Alaska and most of Southern Canada is the length that the deep freeze conditions last? I know here it's rare to have sub -30C temps for longer than 3 days. I'm assuming Alaska/Yukon/NWT cold snaps can all last longer than that?

Girdwood has very warm Alaska winter weather. Your single biggest problem is affordable housing. I live just across Turnagain Arm, this part of Alaska is awesome for lovers of majestic wilderness.

Sounds like fun......I assume you will have housing?
Or do you have to come up with it on your own.

Good way to see what it's all about.

Thanks everyone. The resort does have housing offered. Its still not cheap, but I was warned never to try to relocate to Alaska without serious cash or a job lined up.

I'm pretty fortunate to have some cooking skills and a decent resume.

awe, lovers of majestic wilderness, yes, that's it exactly!

Thanks Hunter, that's what I thought, sort of like a base camp, a security of sorts, as we check out the possibilities.

Sorry to admit I had to google that, Sourdough....ah, the Turnagain Arm!

Looks like the Iditarod National Trail goes right through Girdwood

    Let the adventures begin!

Oh you are going to have so much fun. I was just there a bit over a week ago. Beautiful area. But yea, you don't have to worry about the temps down there. It's pretty mild. If you work your way up to the Fairbanks area, let me know. Have a great time.
Why do I live in Alaska? Because I can.

Congratulations. I moved to AK in 1992 to take a job at a ski area, too. Eaglecrest, on Douglas Island off the coast from Juneau. Lived there for four years. It's got to be one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The weather at Alyeska is mild by interior standards, but still can get quite cold. That area also can get massive amounts of snow, hence the ski area is there. It's almost like going to a different country. Best of luck on your new adventure.

Thanks Power Giant, today I found a thick book, Frommer's Alaska 2008 at a thrift store in perfect condition for 65 cents!. There are tons of maps and descriptions of towns, trails, the Outsider stigma and lots more.

I lived in the South for 12 years...never quit being a Yankee to them , so I plan to work and play hard, listen a lot, and keep a sense of humor.

Good to hear how others relocated to Alaska.
