A bit of backstory. I may get the details off a little but basically the locks were permanently closed in 2011 after about 150 years in service. This threw a curve in some plans to have the Canby Ferry repaired/updated at location that required it to go through the locks. If I recall correctly it was some rather large costly repairs that were scheduled and then all of a sudden couldn't happen because the locks were closed permanently due to deteriorating parts of the system that were non repairable.
In January of this year after much planning and negotiating it was decided that the ferry could pass through the locks under special circumstances and one requirement was that the ferry be unmanned as it passed through. There was fear of something in the locks failing causing big problems. I guess you could call it somewhat historical as the locks were permanently closed.
This past Tuesday, I was a part of getting the ferry on its way back up river to where it runs every day.
