New to forum, looking forward to learning a lot and sharing what little knowledge I have gained so far. Husband and I have been interested in honing survival / homesteading / self-sufficiency skills for some time now. We have a long way to go to reach our dream goal - owning our own acreage off the grid - but we're young (31) our kids are still little (9 and 4) so I try to remind myself that we're just starting this journey and it doesn't have to happen overnight!!
Our immediate focus is learning how to garden (this year is our first year), foraging, and putting food up. My husband is already a proficient bow hunter thankfully. We're also working to declutter - our house, our financials, our minds - simpler means less stress and more contentment.
I have to admit, though, the end goal seems so far off at times, my heart aches to be in a little cabin somewhere, far away from society. I know that it's a hard way to live, but so is this jumbled mess we call modern life. Every time I'm out and about, I see so many glued to their smart phones, and we're constantly bombarded every way we turn by advertisements, noise, drama - reminds me of the book Fahrenheit 451. Society can't sustain this frenetic pace...
