Default The Official Thirst-Quenching Drink Thread

I know, I know.... water's the best and most thirst-quenching thing you can drink. But sometimes it just doesn't cut it.

Summer is here, and I'm up for new recipes, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, for drinks that beat the summertime heat.

Here's one of my latest "discoveries" - simple but incredibly thirst quenching.

1 part Juicy Juice Berry Flavor to 1 part Schwepps Diet Tonic Water over lots of ice.

Several years ago, in the heat of summer, I started making chicha. It's pretty refreshing, and vaguely fruity for being made from corn.

Sweet tea is a great standby also, as is a nice beer, though I like to go light on the hops in the heat.

I found locally a pretty cheap source for unparched inca purple corn by the pound (food for less, if I recall). I would malt it by soaking until it started to sprout, then dry it back out and roast in a baking sheet.

I would grind this up and mix 1lb of it to 3 quarts of clean water, pitch in some activated yeast and let it ferment for a couple days, pour gently and drink. pretty commonly gets from 2 to 4% abv and tastes great.

It's not as much work as it sounds if you malt a big batch of it at a time.

Thanks! I'll be on the hunt for unparched inca purple corn.

It doesn't have to be purple. Any maize which hasn't been kilned (so it will still germinate) will work. The purple corn is actually traditionally used to make non-fermented chicha in Peru.

I've never seen it in stores. Then again, I've never looked for it either.

Hopi blue corn should be pretty close-PM me if you want some.
When I was a kid we always mixxed 1/2 cup of natural cider vinager into 1gallon of water to drink while putting up hay-cuts the dust way better than plain water.

While not exotic or fancy - ice water with a big squeeze of either lemon or lime in it.

Ice cold cranberry juice is one of my favorites.
Unless the occasion calls for an ice cold hard cider.
    But usually rasp-lime selzer.
Ken, why don't you just drink the flavored selzers? Polar makes a great line of them. No calories.

A few years back I was making and drinking, switzel. It's a drink made from cider vinegar, blackstrap mollasas and ginger all mixed up in a quart of water. The amounts will vary depending on preference.
