Default Check Out Earl, the Survival Tablet!

I wanna' be the first kid in my class to get one of these!

"Earl is solar-powered, features a 6″ flexible Amazon Kindle-looking E-ink touch screen and is water/dust/shock/mud-proof. The tablet runs a version of Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and keeps you connected while braving the wild with GPS onboard, FRS, GMRS and MURS two-way radio connectivity for up to 20 miles, and a built in AM/FM/SW/LW radio tuner.

The device can reach full charge on five hours of sunlight and that’s enough power for 20 hours of operation. Other mountain man features are “glove friendly” touch, gyroscope motion controls and the ability to measure temperature, humidity and barometric pressure."

Great. Yet another way for me to spend my money. That looks really cool, but if I keep adding to my list of cool things to buy when I get the chance, I'm going to get swamped!

Any idea why specifically they used an e-ink display?

My guess is (1) easier viewing in sunlight, and (2) the comparatively low power required.

What you are buying for $250 bucks is a place in line for something that hasn't been invented/produced yet.

Hunter, the article I linked makes mention of the fact that it hasn't been produced yet. "Through June 9, you can be a project backer and reserve your own unit for just $249, 30 percent below the expected retail cost. Unit production is on track to begin in July..."

I'm big on redundancy and preventive maintenance. When I was a kid, I always carried a dime in case I needed to make a pay phone call. Well, I needed a ride home once, and that damn phone ate my dime, so after that I had about $5.00 worth of dimes in my pocket everywhere I went.

Brought my computer in this week for regular maintenance. I wasn't aware of any problems, but it turns out that I had 3 nasty viruses on one of my drives that got by both Norton and Malwarebytes. I also have Symantec loaded (but normally disabled because it conflicts with Norton) and I run that about once a week and it didn't pick up the viruses, either. Thing is, even if that virus had taken me down, I could have switched to my second (completely isolated) drive and kept right on going.

LOL, I used to carry a dine in each penny loafer for the same reason......
And in my original PSK circa 1970 or so, had 4 quarters, and just noticed a while back, when I posted it..... that they are still in the new improved version.
