Looking for ember-burning, carving tutorial
Looking for personal experience in ember-burning a bowl or cup ala Tom Brown. I don't need links or book ideas, I have pretty much all of them. What I am looking for is any personal experience from anyone who's done this before. Things I have to be aware of. Things I need to watch out for. Et cetera et al.

biggest piece of advice i can offer is to use something like a small straw to blow on the ember to you have great controll over where you're spreading it.
second advice is to use a long and narrow stick to start your ember, so you can put it here you want easily.
i don't know how tom brown does it, but let me know what problems you're having.

Gotcha. I recently added a straw to my mess kit for just that purpose when cooking with wood (more control, less hair burning, lol).

yes. for full sized fires, i use a troll pole made from an old section of small diameter aluminum tent pole. for burning out mall bowls and cups, something closer to the diameter of one of the coffee stirrers [the hollow plastic kind] works a dream.

a troll pole is just a hollow pole for breath bellowing fires while keeping your face out of the fire, the smoke out of your face and giving you good controll of where you're putting the air.

Bragg - You might be familiar with a fireplace blow poke. It's the same principle just on a smaller scale. You can use one like Sam described to keep the fire burning in your backpacking wood stove. It's particularly useful if the wood is damp. Even smaller still is the coffee stirrer that Canid described for making Mitch's cup. Similar to a bellows or forge in that it forces a lot of oxygen into the fire to make it burn hotter.
