    Default A new dirk

Hello all, I had to take a brief break from all of those puukkos (they were starting to drive me a bit nutty) to work on a custom order. The title says it all. I still have to finish the sheath tomorrow but I thought I would share the knife so far. The handle is brass and cocobolo, but the end piece is a chunk of 200 year old walnut I had lying around. The blade is 5160 sanded to a 600 grit satin finish with mirrored edges, and a stainless steel pin. Overall length is 16 inches with a blade length of 9 inches. Thanks for looking!

    Very nice.

If I may though, a single suggestion, and this is personal opinion and maybe a little OCD, but if that were mine, I would have wanted the grain in the handle to line up. It could be interrupted with the brass rings, but I would want the grain to appear as though it was a solid piece of wood.. Its a technique used in wood working a lot. Basically when you cut the wood, you just line up the grain before securing. Its still very nice work regardless.

JPGreco, I had actually intended on doing that but the pieces you see on the handle originally had another member that split in half when fitting it onto the handle. So basically no matter what the grain would have been interrupted so I decided to line up the grain along the one side and it looks kind of like a tree. I'll post a picture to show you what I mean.

That's a nice piece. Looks remarkably like 6-7c. Celtic blades. I'm curious how you will sheath it.

Ah, that stinks that the piece broke. Still a sweet blade

Oh could you post a different angle of the end piece? I'd like a better look at it. I've never been that interested in knives until I started seeing all the beautiful pieces of art post here. They were always just basic tools to me.

That thing is very stylistically varied. It comes together very nicely. I'm guessing you were somewhat inspired by the Hallstatt knives for this dagger.

Thank you all for the kind words, this project started as a headache but ended up being one of my favorites. I was able to nearly finish the sheath today but not quite so here is a sneak peak. A point goes to anyone who can guess what wood the sheath is made out of...better quality close ups to some upon completion tomorrow.

    That suits the knife great.

In the first pic it loos like ash. Something showier maybe? A nice maple?
