    Cool Yep!

I agree with Crash, and I also recommend the Doan Magnesium block, it has a ferro rod with it. It's issued to the military as well.

I've tried several types -- ferro rods (ferrocerium), flint and steel, and the spark generators that are similar to a cigarette lighter, but without the fluid (they generate a spark by spinning a wheel against a flint). My preference, by far, is the ferro rod. I have a variety in several sizes, including the type that are attached to a magnesium bar. They are very easy to use, and once you start making your fires with the rods, you'll probably never go back to matches (although it's still good to keep some matches in your emergency fire kit).

I finally settled on firesteel, as well.

I have a larger gob because its easier on the damaged wrist.

I should note, that since I made the video I posted some things regarding firesteel.com have come to my attention that have helped me come to the decision to NEVER EVER purchase anything from them again. There are better people with more integrity out there to deal with. His products were fine....turns out that he was not.

My favorite is the BlastMatch, it has a large diameter ferro rod, puts out a huge shower of sparks and you can use it one handed.

    Cool Hmmmm...

Just did some research via google and our member's list. Apparently that fellow is also a member on here but has not been around for some time. Forget about Firesteel.com and buy from Safe Zone...you won't regret it!

    Cool As for me...

I like a good quality Mag. block as well as my "Strike Force;" either one will get the job done!

Say, I tried drilling into a magnesium block to collect shavings. They worked pretty good, but I wonder if there's an easier way to convert the block to a large pile of savings, which I could then packaged into individual clumps.

I prefer a lighter. Bic is a pretty good brand. I throw one or five everywhere.

If its a ferro rod I must say I am quite happy with my Strikeforce. A lighter or matches is fine also of course.

In my limited experience, I have used 3-4 different types of brands. I have used the Firesteel.com ones, the lightmyfire brand, the Cohlgans, and the blastmatch. The Blastmatch I haven't used very much, it sits in my wife's kit. My first purchase was a lightmyfire, just because it was readily available, and most of the others weren't really, like they are now. It works great. The firesteel.com ones work pretty good, but for some reason, I was always able to get more spark from the lightmyfire, with the same technique. The Cohlgans ones have been a pain for me. I can get it to spark, but it is not easy at all. Anyways, that's my experience. I am sure it is different than others. If I were you, I would buy a few different ones and try them out.
