...and I guess I should introduce myself.
I'm a 40-something former farmer in Central Canada.
I've never had any training except CPR and first aid, but I have a lot of kayaking, canoeing, fishing experience, and have shot a lot of smaller animals, mainly as pest control.
The last ten or twelve years, I've been going on solo trips in N. Sask, Manitoba, and Nunavut to a lesser degree. My longest trip so far has been 45 days, and I tend to travel fairly lightly. All gear, clothes, food, boat etc. for my trip last year weighed a total of 90lbs (including the 44lb boat), and I was gone 32 days for 450+ miles, and still had enough supplies to last me another 8-10 days for sure. Obviously I fish when I'm out, but not a great deal. Anyhow, I'd say I'm fairly competent in that environment, travel very casually and mostly off the beaten path, and try not to carry any more than I absolutely have to. I have only been doing spring/summer/fall camping so far, but that may change in the future.
I've had MANY encounters with moose and wolves, but only one with a bear (which woke me up snuffling at my tent). I never bring a firearm, occasionally bear spray (twice), but usually have bear bangers.
Anyhow, Cheers! Here's a pic for the H*ll of it:
