I'm going to modify a mosin similar to that. I discovered you can remove the rear sight base and what's left is a dovetail mount underneath. I plan on getting a dovetail to picatinny rail adapter and mount a micro red dot (Primary arms) or a low profile LER pistol scope.
We got the build process covered too.

I would tell you that using all those adapters is a waste of money but "too each his own", it's your money. You do need to check around before you buy. The same mount is often available for half the price if you turn the next page or go to the next website. I have seen the mount Hunter is using for as little as $15 and a much as $75.

Many of us are using the 2-7 NcStar LER scope due to the amount of scope you get for the money. These Mosins have some long range capabilities and the 7x feature is handy.

The origional scout rifle concept called for a 3x LER scope, mostly because Burris made one of the only LER scopes available at that time in 3x. We are talking about the early 1970s.

Sights for a "scout rifle" are pretty much whatever you want to use; Rear mounted scope, LER scope or ghost rings.

Not a problem....understandable. As I said, in our neck of the woods we hunt either the transition zones (the area between farmland, and the woods), or out in the woods. As such, the longest shot I've had to take to date has been under 200 yards. So, the 2-7x32mm scope I use does the job. However, were I hunting in open areas such as found in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, etc., I might consider something in the range of 4-16x50mm. The problem here at these higher magnifications, is that you won't find a long eye relief scout scope suitable for the Mosin. To make such a scope work, you'll need the JMeck scope mount, as well as a bent bolt.....

    You canbuy that mount only, for about $14 bucks right now;

.......and the scope alone for $40 to $60 bucks......

That mount did not work on my rifle as purchased, I modded it..... but will on "Most?" all others.

That is a nice application Hunter. Looks like you did it on purpose!

Have you had a chance to shoot it yet?

Sorry hunter, I have not checked in for a while. It is a welded on. I wish I knew who built it, they did a very good job. I found it at a gun show a couple of years back.

Rebel when it comes in give me a yell. There are a couple of things you need to know before you start drilling holes.

    Ask me how I know!

WOW I just brought home a Mosin today. I will be doing this also except I will lop off the lug at the end of the barrel and leave the rest there. I will also sporty up the stock once I figure out how to make it stay attached to the receiver and the rest of the barrel.

If you have a lug on the end of the barrel you must have an M44 carbine.

On one of those I would not do anything to the stock. The barrel is already 20" and properly crowned. I might just mount the LER scope, piddle with the trigger and call it done.

The stock will stay attached since everything is held together by the two screws going through the trigger guard and action. But like I said, I would do nothing to a carbine since I like their looks as they are.

Here's a pic of mine. It was one of those days when nothing seemed to go right. i twisted and broke a couple of drill bits. The compressor stopped working. The pins wouldn't fit. Running out of time for a shoot, I just welded the scope mount on. So, I slapped a $59 simmons scope on it and let it ride.

I ordered http://www.davidtubb.com/final-finish-tms we'll see if that makes a difference.

The problem is, I don't enjoy reloading. A BIG yawn for me.
