Christmas present
Sooo Mrs. Santa is letting me purchase another gun for my Christmas present. Keep in mine there is a price limit but my choices are SKS, Hi point .40 carbine or a reproduction of a "trench gun" (1897 Browning shotgun). I don't "need" another gun but dang I like them. What would you choose and why?

Such choices are entirely personal, and based on a combination of what one has versus what one wants. Therefore anything I may say is likely to be useless to you
Now, with that said, my personal choice would be a good, SOVIET, SKS carbine.
Personally, give those choices would be an SKS as well......and Yeah a Soviet version if possible.

Absolutely a Soviet SKS.I have one in excellent condition and am looking for a second one.
