Incidentally, this taxon is distributed only west of the Rockies. There's little risk of region-based misidentification involved when you know which mushrooms grow where.

Contrary, you don't have to know a mushroom first hand to learn to identify it, though as always it pays to be cautious more than it pays to be bold.

There are old mushroom hunters.

There are bold mushroom hunters.

There ain't very many bold, old mushroom hunters.

Oriental mushrooms, yes, as for botton/portabella, no.

Thankfully, mushrooms are not limited to oriental mushrooms and 2 species of Agaricus, and the medicinal properties and potential medicinal properties are not geographically constrained.
