Echo2, How hot can you get the water with that heater coil?

You wont want to put your hands in it....the one I used, you can pull the bottom off of it to dump the coals, to stop heating the water.

Another troop made one that used propane.

When I was a kid dad installed a very similar setup in our coal furnace running into a pre-heat tank then into the hot water tank. The water was pre-heated in the winter before it reached the water heater, which reduced gas usage.

Dunno...The one I used was stainless steel.

I know you can boil water in plastic.....not exactly recommended...but it can be done.

All it is, is a simple heat exchanger.
