    Default Sick steer

I just got back in from watering the cows and noticed a steer limping real bad. He is normally the wild one in the bunch and wont let you get near him. I'm hoping it's just Footrot and not Blackleg. I gave him a shot of Florfenicol and will continue with that for a few days. Worse case scenerio is to butcher.

Blackleg on the other hand will take it's course. He will be dead within 48 hours. Such a waste if thats the case.

Ill let you know how it goes.....

I hate the thought of butchering on a Sunday.....24 more hours will tell the tale. Still hasnt moved.

There is a 28 day waiting period after injecting florfenicol before butchering.

Think I would wait.Since you really dont know what the steer has,and since you injected the Florfenicol, just to be safe.

That is for commercial sales only. I only give 12% recommended dose so I'm not worried about my family consuming the steer. I also bloodlet alot different than commercial slaughter houses and hang minimum 28 days.

I feel deep down Nell he may be fine. He doesnt look as depressed, his eyes are clearer and he must have been up during the night eating as he was chewing cud when I snapped the pic.

Since the hoof isnt swollen (footrot) he may have just stepped on a frozen turd and split and injured his hoof.

    Crossing my fingers.

    Default Update

First time up in 3 days. I shook the grain bucket and he got up slowly and came over. Just a bit of a limp is all. I think hes gonna be OK, a real survivor for sure.

    Glad to hear it Bragg.
There is no greater solitude than that of the Tracker in the forest, unless perhaps it's that of the wolf in the wilderness.
