So i went for a hike the other day and found some things. How about these mushrooms about half way up the mountain (dont know what it is) the outer rim kinda glows purple.

Or how about a corn snake, salamander, and frog (not used for food). Kept the snake as a pet tho.

I really need to learn shrooms.

The scare me and I'm fearless.
I had a compass, but without a map, it's just a cool toy to show you where oceans and ice are.

Chicken of the woods is the only shroom I harvest.. Easy to identify, no poisonous look alikes, and delicious!!! Other ones I stay away from... Some edibles have poisonous look alikes that can only be differentiated by spore prints... Any others can poison you simply by TOUCHING them!

Looks like a fun day you had!

Nightshade- I routinely handle poisonous mushrooms. Can you give an example of this?

I was thinking specifically of " death caps" ( Amanita phalloides). I was told that before, while visiting family in California.. Upon some further research right now, (to get the Binomial name rather than just the common name) it seems touching it can give you a bad rash like poison ivy in some individuals... While eating just a little bit (30 grams or about half a cap) will be fatal.
Seems like it was confusion on my part, though I still don't think I'd handle any wild mushroom that I couldn't identify.
    I apologize for the confusion.

No problem NS. I was just curious because I don't want to handle the wrong one. I have handled Amanita Phalloides on many occasions and never had trouble, but that doesn't mean others won't. We all have different skin. Thank you.

It does seem as though it would be tough to ID many mushrooms w/o touching them, as it's best to place the caps on glass or black and white paper to get a good spore print. Perhaps gloves would do the trick

I found a mushroom in my yard. It looked just like an edible in my book, so I ate it. I was kind of sick the next day. Turns out, I should have done a spore test. Anyway, I lived, and learned.

You keep that up and your screen name will be more appropriate than you probably care for.

A bad day in the woods is better than a good day at work, so looks like you make out like a king!

I am becoming more familiar with local 'shrooms and really enjoying the process. No, not the recreational drug kind... and I don't eat anything that I am unsure of or anything that isn't 100% identified by someone I am 100% sure knows what they are talking about (I double check what they say with a good reference and consider their reputation with others). That means I pass up most mushrooms I identify. For those of you interested in fungi, your local mycological society probably runs trips and lectures, so join up. The first ones to learn are the "deadlies". However, a word of warning. Not everyone who is a long time member is both knowledgeable and a conservative consumer of mushrooms. In my opinion, this is a group of edibles that should not be treated casually so choose well your mentor and your mushroom dinner host!

Violet Toothed Polypore, inedible as far as I know. That link is for the hardwood variety. The conifer variety by the same common name can be found here.
