Default Some people are born stupid and some stop to take pictures.

Why do I live in Alaska? Because I can.

I took my first solo back packing trip ever in Denali. It was awesome. But yea, I got scared by a bear.

Now there's 3 threads started about this bear attack. No excuses for not hearing about it!

1stimestar - as you may know - I take a lot of pictures - but strongly believe in a big zoom or telephoto lens on the camera.

I carry a little beretta jet 22lr pistol for bears, best gun for bears there is. The last time we were attacked by a grizzly, I shot my BIL in the knee with it and I was able to get out of there with a brisk walk in the opposite direction. I fear I may be running out of hiking partners LOL.

I was thinking the same thing. Had this been an experienced photographer, surely he would have had some telephoto equipment. He could have taken some great pics from a SAFE distance and made it out unscathed. This appears to be someone who believed the rules of wildlife engagement didn't apply to him. The bear, just doing what was an instinctive response to a perceived threat, was the real victim here.

for some reason people with little or no outdoor experience seem to be pushing further in to the woods, and that does not always turn out for the best.

You got that right. Another victim of their own stupidity and the bear ends up getting shot.

    Heh, thanks for the merge.

Yea, to get a back country permit for Denali is pretty involved. You can't say he didn't know any better.

How can you look at something THAT BIG and not hear a little voice inside saying, "keep moving"? The first wild grizzly I actually saw in the wild was in Danali. The thing was huge. It's like looking at a pickup truck. There was this very primal feeling of, "Oh, crap!". Eighteen minutes later I'd have been a good half mile down the trail not still snapping pictures. Of course, I'm still breathing and he's.....well, not. Pretty sad he had to lose his life to learn a lesson.

Here are some of mine that actually got put in our newspaper. I will say that I was totally safe as I was on a bridge. The bear would have had to go a long distance to get to the end of the bridge and by then I would have been in my car lol.

Ugh, now I can't edit. Well it lets me edit but wont let me save the edit. Probably my computer which is on its way out. I was going to add that these were taken in Denali.

This just goes to show why it is IMPOSSIBLE to make anything foolproof.

Why? Because fools are so danged ingenious...

St. Peter chuckling: "Wait, wait. Just...just a minute. Hey, God! Come here a minute. You'll like this."
St. peter turns to victim: "Okay, now tell me again. How long were you taking pictures of this grizzly?"
    Thunderous laughter.....
