Default Pheasant Back, Dryad Saddle, I'm stocking up

I have dehydrated 25, 8"-10" of these so far and still have a decent amount growing near me, they grow so fast that I check every other day for harvesting them. They are good in soups, sauces, etc. easy to identify and harvest. Looking forward to having soup made of dehydrated stinging nettles,Dryads Saddle, small game for meat, MMMMMM Those who have never tried it may be missing something also a nice prepping item if SHTF okay when SHTF for soup and stew thickeners.
Heres some pics I like to cook up some as a side dish when BBQing

I've eaten them a few times, but only 2 or 3" around the edge was tender enough to eat. Seemed very fresh but I don't know? Do they tender up in a soup? I just break off what comes off the edge and simmered 'em in butter with a little garlic, not much taste otherwise.

Gotta love the watermelon rind smell though.... I could sniff 'em all day!!!!

they do not tender up too much, and the woodier portions, like most shelf fungi tend to cause indigestion. the trick is to bite your lip and only allow yourself to harvest the tender parts (fresh growth and cap margins). there's no harm in just trimming off the margins of the mature caps, and letting the bulk of the cap continue to do it's thing. It's what I do with Laetiporus too.

Oh Canid, the chickens is da bomb!!!! I had to look the Laetipous up, not to keen on the sientifc specific...lol. My kids love 'em. When they were little ever time I'd come back from squirrel hunting they could care less if I got any squirrels. They'd run out o the car asking "Did you find any chickens dad!"

I love the smell of pheasant backs! I'm not too fond of the flavor normally, but they are abundant and that makes them valuable as survival fare. i like to smoke them with apple, or dehydrate the tough portions and grind into a "flour" for breading chicken, fish etc.
