But think of all the flashlights and firestarter I could get for $179.00 !
Dont leave that thing in your pack with it switched on. Ouch.

I think you're mostly paying for the high-grade awesome that powers it.

Yeah. Awesome is a highly inflated commodity right now.

You can also use it as a weapon. Blind someone temporarily or knock them upside the head. NOW how much would you pay for it? Now wait...before you answer, you also get...

I've made one of these before.... I used an old mag light and the laser diode from a dvd/rw drive. It's actually pretty cheap (assuming you don't need the drive anymore)
You really don't need much technical know how either- just a blatant disregard for personal safety and common sense.
It was one of my early attempts to build a lightsaber.

My first thought was, "Pffft. Photoshop." My second thought was, "My eyes! My eyes! He shined it in my eyes!!!!!!"

you absolutely did *not* make one of *those* that way, but yes, you can make reasonably powerfull little lasers from a cd/dvd/blueray lasers.

Yeah, I don't play with the lightsaber anymore either, much...swing it around, and be cutting stuff up, was in fear of my body parts if I dropped it......

Don't know if this is the same light or not, but I saw one that they also used as a stove to cook an egg.
