Any slingers here? I enjoy making slings but am not at all good at using them. Tony

If you want more info on slinging (construction, what ammo to use, how to manufacture your own artificial ammo and how to use the sling properly) I've been using Slinging.org as my primary source for a while now.

If you practice not just to be accurate, but to be accurate within a 2' wide target area from any distance around 20-30 yards, throw with a force that would be deadly no matter where the ammo hits the animal, to be unnoticeable to the prey until it is too late for them, and to use a side arm style release method (due to its lack of any repeated circular swings to gain speed and its fairly rapid release time), then in a survival situation, hunting game animals the size of a large deer with a sling and some smooth rocks you found at a nearby river is not only possible, it is fairly likely to yield results depending on how far away from civilization you are and how abundant animals you could hunt are in that area.

As a side note, you can also hunt birds with a sling very easily when they come in flocks. Ever hear the expression "Kill two birds with one stone"? This is where that comes from.

I spent a good bit of time back in the early to mid 90s practicing with a sling. I lived on a small farm then and target practiced daily. But with dozens of attempts I never got a kill, rabbit, squirrel, coon and groundhog. The only one I got a good enough hit on was a rabbit as they're so fragile its back was broken. I say now looking back head shots are most important. And birds are a good target with a sling as fragile = easy disabling blow.

As for deer, I would more likely prefer using a sling spear for the penetration.
