    Default Happy Solstice!

Happy Solstice! For those of us in the beautiful North we get Sunrise at 2:57am and Sunset at 12:49am, after that we will start losing daylight. We'll still have 24 hours of visible daylight for another month. And then its AURORA season!

I know that the "longest day" probably takes on special meaning for you in an area that also experiences very "short days".

My wife and I "celebrate" both Solstices by watching the sun set into the Pacific. Yesterday there was so much cloud-cover along the western horizon that we couldn't see even the faintest glimmer of sunlight.

The sangria still tasted great, though!

If U R from some American NDN nations -- yes.

Other, non-NDN, traditions differ a bit. All are worthy.

Yes Summer Solstice is a holiday of great celebration for us. In winter it is as well because after Winter Solstice we start to get our light back. I do love winter of course, but summer is so rejuvenating! It was in the 80's yesterday. For us that is pretty uncomfortably warm. Here's some pictures I took in the midnight hour. This is the Tanana River on which I live.

Aw too bad you had such clouds. But yea, sangria is always good.

'Specially when you make it yourself, with an inexpensive local Cabernet Sauvignon and the also-local fresh fruits (strawberries, oranges, lemons, limes, plums, nectarines, raspberries, etc.)

    Yum, YUM!

Oh, and let us not forget the judicious application of an orange liqueur and Bacardi 151...!(Should anyone strike a match, the most likely sound would be "WHOOOOOSH!")

Oh do tell! I think I'd like to do something like this for a winter project this year. Maybe venture into wine making or some such.

...although I'm not sure if getting good, fresh fruit would be feasible, you can start off with just fruit juice can't you?

    1stimestar,

Actually, fruit juice is not the best place to start. Instead, begin with two bottles of any decent, inexpensive Cabernet or Meritage (a blend of several red wines). Pour into a container and add slices of the freshest fruits you can find. Add some orange liqueur (triple-sec, cointreau, etc.). Using your taste-buds as a guide, you may add a bit of refined sugar.

Cover securely and place in refrigerator. Let it sit for at least 24 hours.

To serve add ginger ale to taste, and a few ice cubes as needed. Yum, YUM!

Yes Turtle Island is also our reference for the Earth in our culture. I have a tattoo of a Pine tree rooted on the back of a Turtle, an Eagle is overhead keeping watch over us. The top is silhouetted by Sister Moon.

1stimestar - I tended bar a long, long time ago. I made a very popular (based on sales and consumption) sangria. Here's the recipe - which may be tarnished by about 30 years of living since I tended bar -

Start with a good quality burgundy (I made it in gallon burgundy jugs that were 1/2 full) -

Add orange juice, 7-Up, and Sweet & Sour ( http://www.drinksmixer.com/desc666.html ) to taste (tasting is the fun part).

Pour into pitcher and top with (if available) slices of oranges, lemons, limes.
