Default Duck Ponds, Ditches, and a New Garden

And a dry joke or two.

I have moved back into the home that I grew up in, the home that my Father built us so many years ago. There are some maintenance items, and some new thinking that needs taken care of. But as with so many of these projects, I remind myself of a joke I heard quite a few years ago.

The Mayor of a small town was convicted of a heinous crime, one much too sinister to discuss here. But, needless to say, he got what he deserved. A jury found him guilty, and sentenced him to death by hanging. The city Engineer was given the job of writing specifications for a gallows. It turned out to be a quite lengthy and in-depth set of specs. He toleranced lumber, he called for shallow steps, he called for the trap door to be tested at min and max loads. He even specified quality and quantity of fasteners. The list went on and on, hand rails, a trussed beam for the rope proper, etc, etc.

That set of specifications was handed to a subordinate, only a draftsmen, and he was given the deadline of the following day to have it drawn up so that the shop could build it the coming week. In a frantic all night session, he submitted this to the shop.

With the time allowed, that's what he thought would do the job. So, next of course, the shop builds it.

I carry all of the above personalities, well with the exception of the former Mayor. I think you'll see that in the posts to come.

We, Martha and I, attack on four fronts.

The Duck Pond, shown here as the Cattail Pond, filled by years of neglected drainage.

The lower drive, part of the neglected drainage.

The Garden, You have to make a flat spot here in WV.

The upper drive, AKA the Varmint path, basically a dirt path.

The Engineers specs for the garden were, of course, elaborate. Hard wood timber, ship lap joints, non corrosive fasteners, yada, yada, yada.

    The Draftsman drew it.

Well, that was easy. It only took a couple of minutes, to post.

That, sir, is some genuinely robust timber!! And I will be happy to vouch for your word that W.V. is indeed hilly. It is the only place I've been in this country that the road was so steep going downhill that I never had any wear on the rear tires, nor any wear on the front tires going uphill!

They are mill culls for various reasons, fine for a hillbilly garden. Turned out to be cheaper than using dimensional lumber, and I am rather certain they will last longer. The only real complaints were from my biceps and back.
