Saturday was a pretty good day.
I showed my girlfriend how to use flint and steel. I then coerced her into giving it a try. She got some charred cloth, placed it on the flint, and striked it with the steel till she caught a spark. I had her some dried pine needles ready for her, so she wrapped them around her charred cloth and blew in into flame. She was one happy girl.
As we watched her fire burn down, I told her about about burning pinecones to ward off mosquitoes and showed that to her and she was very impressed.
We walked a little bit, and I got out my bow drill set I've been playing with. I showed it to her and explained a little about it. As we were talking the mosquitoes came back out and she want my lighter to light another pinecone on fire. Nope... I handed her the tin with my flint, steel, and charred cloth. She got the fire going in no time at all.
She wasn't as interested in the bowdrill as much as the flint and steel. She tried the bowdrill a little but was getting fed up with the spindle coming undone. But when we got finished playing outside, she had to go inside and show everyone what we were doing.
Now I think I'm going to have to get her a fire tin complete with flint, striker, and show her how to make charred cloth.
