    Default Anti Biotic expirations dates

I happened upon a "Channel" on You Tube by Nurse, her handle is The PatriotNurse. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQSEx...kgqq3g&lf=plcp

I viewed many of her videos and she seems to be providing some good advice.

One video in particular struck me as quite useful and it was on medicine true expiration dates. Example CIPRO is good for up to 11 years after its posted expiration date!!!! She presented a good video, with alot of US Government sites as reference that makes a valuable resource. The rest of her videos seem to be concise and informative. And frankly it is good to hear a womans perspective in areas I probably would not have thought of. SHe discusses nutrition, mental health , children issues also.

This is the video mentioned above

We talked about this in the "how do you store your meds" thread. I hate that she implies there is an FDA conspiracy on the expiration dates. Anyway, we came to the conclusion that meds were indeed good years later based on tests the CDC performed for the military when their stockpiles were reaching the expiration dates. Here's a link from the other thread.

Didn't I already respond to an inquiry similar to this? The AirForce did a study in to 90s, It seems that a large portion of their meds inventory was coming up on its expiration date and would have cost millions to replace. Their findings.... most dry meds (pills, powder, etc) were good for 114 months after their expiration date as long as they hadn't been exposed to extreme temperature.

I guess I actually mis titled this post.

My point was her as a resource for medical questions. She seems use common sense and liberal postings of sites to search.

Well in a SFTF situation, I would just take it and hope it still works! What else could you do?

From what I understand, the Military looked into the TRUE expiration times for antibiotics and found that they last much longer than listed. After all, the pharmaceutical industry does not make money until medical stocks are replenished - the quicker you throw out your supplies and purchase new, the bigger the bonuses they get.

Does anyone actually read the threads?

Yeah, expiration dates are a conspiracy by the pharmaceutical industry. Sheeesh.

A good many of us on here are old enough to remember when prescriptions did NOT carry an expiration date. They simply sat in the medicine cabinet until you needed it and then you just took it. It didn't matter a whit how old it was. Probably not the best method for treating most maladies and certainly a danger with some concoctions.

In 1979 the FDA began requiring pharmaceutical companies to post a date in which they guaranteed the full potency and safety of the drug. It did not and does not mean the drug is unsafe after that date or that it won't do what it is supposed to do. You might find it interesting that the law applied equally to human and veterinarian drugs and it was the FDA's attempt to establish "best manufacturing practices". Does that phrase sound familiar? The effort began 3 years earlier in 1976. It was the governments effort to ensure a safe drug supply in the U.S. I'm sure 20 years from now we'll be talking about the great lettuce conspiracy or the great hamburger conspiracy because e.Coli contamination forced chances in the food supply.

If you are interested, here's the actual law as it was written. By the way, it's quite lengthy.

It also ensures that the pharmaceutical companies don't let drugs sit in a warehouse for a year or two before shipping them out. They have to move the product to meet the expiration dates. That did not have to occur prior to 1979. They could store them as long as they wanted since they didn't "expire".

Just FYI. Did you guys know that most of the antibiotics found for aquarium use, are very simular to antibiotics for human consumption. There is one kind that is basically amoxacilin in liquid form. A lot of preppers buy aquarium antibiotics to store for emergency use. I am not recommending that anybody go out and take aquarium antibiotics, but for SHTF, it is a consideration.

The liquid form will degrade with time where the solid form will not.

"It's true the effectiveness of a drug may decrease over time, but much of the original potency still remains even a decade after the expiration date. Excluding nitroglycerin, insulin, and liquid antibiotics, most medications are as long-lasting as the ones tested by the military. Placing a medication in a cool place, such as a refrigerator, will help a drug remain potent for many years." (my highlight)

Great thread! The one perk more or less of the &%$#@!!! Lyme disease is a load of various antibiotics that all came with refills.
Guess I will get the Cipro refilled.
"I enjoy surviving." Yes, well I certainly hope so as the other side of that is "DEATH!"

So would it be beneficial to freeze the liquid antibiotics? Hmmmm.

Just freeze the liquid part. Then you should be okay.

Antibiotics used on any mammal can be used by humans as well.

Gotta ask for a source. That's a pretty bold statement. Might be true but I'd like to read it.

I might also point out that there is an investigation underway over meds from Canada. It seems they come from all over the world and aren't necessarily what they say they are. Hmm. Imagine that. I'm hard pressed to understand why anyone would scoff at US medications and go buy them from some web site. And if you can't trust human meds how on earth can you possibly know what is in the animal med?

Here's an article on fake vet drugs.

And another that contained none of the actual drug at all.
