Default Anyone ever been to the Porcupine Mountains in the UP of Michigan?

What little of a ski season we had in Colorado is coming to and end soon and I want to expand on my adventures. Anyone every camped or hiked in the Porcupine Mountains in the UP of Michigan?

Just looking for some info or general advice. Thanks in advance.

I've never been to Michigan, but if you're currently living in Colorado its about an equal distance from Colorado to Michigan as it is from Colorado to Washington. There is some excellent hiking/camping here. Between the Olympic Mountains, Cascade Mountains, tons of coastline/islands, and the arid land east of the Cascades there is something for everyone. The Cascades are renowned for their beauty and I will back that up.

A good week and half to two week long hike would be the Wonderland Trail. It has been debated as one of the most beautiful hikes in the world.

The Wonderland Trail is nearly a 100-mile circuit that circumnavigates 14,411-foot Mt. Rainier, Washington. Mt. Rainier is the tallest and most significant glaciated volcano in the contiguous United States [1]. The Wonderland Trail passes through deep rain forests, crosses tall mountain passes, alpine meadows and glacial streams.

Thank you for posting that. I have some friends in the PNW, but I will be heading back to the Upper Great Plains in a few weeks. Plan to head out with a few friends and go somewhere closer to home.

I live not too far from the Porkys but have never hiked or camped that area. There is good fishing in most of the lakes and streams and some SERIOUS wild country for such a rather small park. Several years ago there was a report of a camper killed or mauled by a bear while remote camping.
