hunter63, thanks for the warning. I'm not planning on eating the mushrooms. I'm planning to dry them and then see if they'll catch sparks. But you're right, I'll still be careful touching them.

I tried some of the punk wood that I found yesterday with rock/steel last night. One of the quality-check tests that I always perform is to see if the material will hold an ember if I form the ember with a flame. If the material won't even hold an ember when exposed directly to fire, there's no use wasting any effort to get it to form an ember with weaker heat sources. This punk wood passed the quality-check. So I had some hope that it might catch a spark. One or two sparks landed on the wood and seemed to stay there very briefly. But no embers. It's possible there was still some moisture in the punk wood. I'll try again this weekend and see if I can manage to keep the wood right on the edge of the rock and then get a spark to stick to the rock that is touching the wood.
