    Default dehydrator.......take two

friday when I arrived back to my office I was surprised to find a 250 dollar gift certificate for cabelas. I did a favour by helping some folks warranty a boiler, I had told them no pay was necessary but this is kewl too. It's take two because I asked about dehydrators a while back.

anyhoo I was thinking about a dehydrator. I have one about built, there's some wiring and misc to finish. But a commercial unit would be nice as well.

I'm thinking about the 80 liter in the link below. Any thoughts or experience with this unit? thanks

No experience with it, but willing to do a quality control test on your first (and second) batch of beef jerky. The second batch is to ensure that your results are consistent.

    The good:

It came down the chimney, replaced a 35 year old Harvest Maid.

    It's huge

    It's HOT

    It's powerful

    It's programmable, somewhat

It's working on activated almonds as we speak/type.

    The bad:

If you'll read the reviews, they can't get the feet shipped right, nor the drip tray. I can confess to that first hand. They made it right, quickly.

The trays will not fit a standard dishwasher

You will spend over a "C" note on screens and leather trays

The leather trays do not have a lip

I have an Excalibur 5 Tray. It's a bit cheaper than the Cabela's and does a great job. It has both a temp control and timer and the blower is in the back so clean up is pretty easy. The timer is really helpful. You can just set it and forget about it. No need to rotate trays or anything.

Whatever you decide on do yourself a favor and purchase this book. It is an excellent book on dehydrator rules and recipes. I think others on here will agree with me on the book. I know several have it.

I agree with Rick: that is one book you can't do without.

thanks for the info, I'm going to get the book. Not sure about the dehydrator but need to strike while the iron is hot.

As far as my jerky goes, it's dry meat without flavouring, no liquid smoke, no soy sauce, no pepper, etc, most folks don't care for it LOL.

If they don't care for it then you'll have it all to yourself. Good plan!
