Hand warmers...oxygen absorbing

Was watching NatGo late last nite....Doomsday Peppers, guys are a tad over the top,.... but did notice that one guy was sealing corn and rice in mylar bags and using the chemical hand warmers to suck up oxygen to keep pests down.

I know they react with air (oxygen) and produce heat for several hours....I use and carry them all the time......Just made me wonder?

Any thoughts?

I hadn't heard of it. After you posted it I used some Googlefu, and apparently there are quite a few claims (and videos) that it works. Haven't watched any yet though.

I think I'd want to be real sure what is in those hand warmers before tossing it in with my food stores.
Iron? Salt? What kind of salt? sawdust? vermiculite? From where? Some of them are non-toxic, which leads me to suspect some of them are mildly toxic. They even make them 'safe for kids' but that might have something to do with a kid not knowing enough to let go if/when it gets too hot.
Yeah. I'd stick to dry ice...

They definitely have iron in them. I am not sure about the rest.
