    Default Happy Solstice!

We are anxious to start getting our light back. Sure it starts off as only a 3 second a day gain. But soon it will be rushing back at 7 minutes more per day.

    Dec. 21
Sunrise 10:59 AM, Sunset 2:40 PM

    Length of Day 3h 40m

Tomorrow will be 0m 3s longer.

    Bring on the LIGHT!

Here's what it looks like from up here as the sun peeks over the horizon.

Cool video. I imagine there is a whole lot more sleeping or other indoor stuff going on with the short days and "cooler" temps.

It has nothing to do with cults. Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year and Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year. When you live in the sub arctic or above, these days mean a lot. Such as today, if you read my post, we have a day of 3 hours and 40 minutes. We're not even getting that today as it is dark and snowing. It's a day for celebration, even the town celebrates with solstice festivals and fireworks. It's a day to spend with friends and to put away the problems of the previous year and open oneself to the light of the coming year. When your winter is as dark as ours, you tend to really celebrate the returning of the sun.

I’m at 61° 47’ longitude so the solstice arrived here at 1:30 am on the 22nd. Being at 45° latitude, I’m only getting 1 extra second today but that will start to snowball in a month or so. Declination is 23°S 15’ today so it’s nice to see the sun slowly making its way back to the northern hemisphere. The day length today is 8 hours and 44 minutes. I get excited when it’s light out at 5:30 PM. With a 3 hour and 40 minute day length ........... ya, anything extra is a cause for celebration.

1st - We were in Fairbanks in early August and if I remember correctly there was like 2 or 3 hours of "dusk". I've never been so messed up with light around the clock. I can only imagine that 24 hours of darkness (or nearly) has to get pretty dismal pretty quick.

The very first morning I was up getting dressed and my wife asked me what I thought I was doing. I pointed out the window and said, "It's morning. I'm getting dressed." She said,

    "It's 3:00 a.m."

Yes in the summer it doesn't get quite dark. Most people when they are new here put tin foil in their bed room windows.

Lol yep, especially in the winter. We do our big town fireworks show for New Year's Eve instead of the 4th of July too.

I would love to visit Alaska but only in the summer. I have such bad arhritiis I could not stand the winer cold. I guess if I had grown up in it that would be different but since I did not I guess I would be like Rick getting up at some ungodly hour thinking it was morning. Glad you can look forward to the returning of the light.

I don't know that that whole being light all of the time would bother me. I'm visiting my MIL. It's 83 degrees and 2:51 pm - I just woke up from a nap and had no problems.

Some people don't have any problems with it and some do. More do then don't. After the first few years here, it no longer bothered me. In the winter, though our instincts really do tell us to hunker down and hibernate, it's important to get out of the house and go do stuff. Since I work, that's not an issue with me but it was last year.
