Thumbs up November 5-6, 2011 (pic heavy)

I recently went out with a couple of guys into the North Georgia mountains. We were outside of Dahlonega and drove right by where the Army Rangers train. In fact, we found a lot of their trash they left in the National forest including spent shells, blank bullets, a broken mre spoon and much more. We had to hike in around 2 miles on and off trail to get to camp. All had a really good time and here's some pictures

Black Birch has a bit of wintergreen in it and would be good for that morning breath.

It was the first time me and this other fellow attempted the bow drill with somebody there to show us how. It only took minimal instruction and this is what we were rewarded with.

The food was fantastic with lots of bacon, sausage, noodles, dumplings, and bannock.

Looks like fun. You fellas must have some tough taters.
I had a compass, but without a map, it's just a cool toy to show you where oceans and ice are.

I have to say the highlight for me was the food and the bowdrill. Me and the other guy got a coal and fire on the first try! The set was supplied by one of the guys and we were using willow on willow.

I went to school for a very short time in Dahlonega, until they asked me not to return, and loved the area. I may have to move back there as it appears we have many more leaves on the trees at this time, than what you have there. When I was going to school, the army was always using the parade field at North Georgia College, to medivac rangers out from injuries during training. Do you guy's ever hit the old gold mines that are in the area?

I have never been there before, so I haven't panned it. A couple did bring their pans if they wanted to pan for gold, but we were all too busy messing around so they didn't pan either.
