    Default Nuclear Accident Location Map

I struggled a bit with the title for this. Anywhoo, if a nuclear reactor in the U.S. were to have an accident would you and your family be safe? Here's a map that let's you plug in your zip code and it will list how far you live from a number of reactors. Good luck!

"If a crisis at a nuclear reactor happened in the U.S., could you be living in a danger zone? In a 10-mile radius, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the air could be unsafe to breathe in the event of a major catastrophe. In 50 miles, food and water supplies may be unsafe."

My zip code places me at 50 miles away. Almost there, but not quite.

It's always a good idea to know what is around you so that you can tailor your preps accordingly. Good link. Keep in mind also that there are a lot of training and research reactors out there as well in addition to military reactors.

    Well what do you think?
    Closest Plants Distance

    • Watts Bar 1- 123 mi
    • Sequoyah 1, 2- 139 mi
    • Browns Ferry 1, 2, 3- 179 mi
    • Oconee 1, 2, 3- 234 mi
    • Clinton 262 mi

Is that a far enough distance? All are S or SE of me.

NYC (and yours truly) is screwed. If it's not one thing it's something else.
But then what else is new?

You will still have to factor in wind direction and speed to determine if fallout would be moving in your direction. However, for a localized event you are probably in good shape. My numbers look very similar.

Now we have more reason than ever to move to our favorite ski spot in Utah--500 miles to the nearest nuclear plant. And their gun laws are pretty nice too.

    821 miles. Works for me.
I had a compass, but without a map, it's just a cool toy to show you where oceans and ice are.

I lived and slept a couple of hundred feet from a nuclear reactor for many years. I slept between missile tubes that had the capability of carrying 24 nuclear tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles. I ain't skeerd.

I wonder if that explains my avatar color.

Something to think about....There are other applications that use nuclear power...such as sterilizatin...It could be next door...Such as a medical test tube factory.....Surprise, surprise..

WOOOH.... 51 miles. I'm staying home... lol
Just have to pray the wind isn't blowing east that day...

Oh, and there is another reactor 52 miles away, so that one, any direction but south is fine by me that day.

And we shall know him by his glow.

Winter - You can call me Richard, but not Richard Head.

CS - Your point is a good one. A fire in any facility of that type could pose a hazard I suppose. I have no idea how that stuff is stored. I'm sure they have to have some type of containment. Someone makes Xray machines and they have to install those tubes.

About 75 miles out from AZ's nuke plant, depending on wind direction.

Uh, I think...what I mean to say is....isn't the distance the same regardless of wind direction? We don't take that into account when figuring distance in the Midwest. There is that whole "as the crow flies" thing though.

We used to have an operating nuke plant about 17 miles away.
Everyone used to get amps basicially showing the same numbers as well a evacuation routes.

It has been shut down for quite a while, and didn't show up on the zip code search.....Hmmm, wonder why?
The 'stuff' is still there I would think.

They truck that stuff all over the country. They might have shipped it out of there.
