Default Help....Help....HELP What do I need for a short walk'about......?

Well I am going for a short three day walk (18+ Miles the first day) and 9'ish miles the next two days. Weather looks fair. Lots of BIG bears in the Russian Lakes Area. I'll be alone when hiking, and sleep in forest service cabins at night. I have never been around the Russian Lakes Trail System & not sure where it starts, but I think I know where it ends, so I'll park there (the end) and find a trail and hump it backwards, and then forward.

So what should I pack......? This trip is mostly for exercise & sight seeing.

I'd go REI style. Ultralight gear and freeze dried food. Bring what you need and leave no trace. I like to bring small field books to study up on things I come across. A pint and some sqeeter dope. Oh yeah, toilet paper.

Just think back to what gear you humped around when you were guiding hunting clients and then lighten that load by 98%.

And don't forget the Hummer Limo. Sounds like a wonderful experience.

    A camera, definitely a camera.

Other than that, I would go as light as possible.

Have it catered.....stash food, cooking stuff, sleeping stuff at the cabins ahead of time....That way you can take all the knives and ammo you can carry.
Oh, Yeah, keep the TP with you.

Umm, but coming back will take at least 2 days, so consider that, unless you are planning to live there and then you sould take a lot of gear. Oh and take a good map also because thinking you know where something is, is not very reassuring, you might walk right by the trail or cabin.

Some bear spray (or whatever it´s called), i don´t know how well it works but better than just a knife to fight a grizzly or something.
oh, and I agree with finallyME a camera is a good idea (upload them and send pictures afterwards)

I have one of those gut feelings here. Maybe I'm wrong buttttttttttttttttttt. This post by SD reeks a bit of sarcasium .(spelling?) Can't quite see this man going into an area he doesn't know as unprepared as it sounds. What do I take? What kind of knife do I carry? " I don't know where the trail starts but I THINK I know where it ends." This just doesn't sound like the Sourdough I have been reading since I entered the forum. IMHO

Yes and no.......The trip is real. I did 10 miles on the 29'incher today to break-in the quadriceps. We went back one of the most awesome valleys in Alaska today, Palmer Creek Valley. It was "CAVU" & 68 degrees.

Well, I am back alive. was good exercise, most of the trail is under canopy so not much view. Had one Black Bear in camp last night was a good photo opt. I am sore and tired. I did (10)Ten miles yesterday in exactly 3 hours, that is about 18 minutes for a mile, or 3 1/3 miles per hour (Not very good). I did 10.6 miles today in 3 hours and 50 minutes. O'Well getting old sucks.
