Wild Strawberries are ripe in Central Missouri. Plus, with all the rain we have received this year....some are huge.

I managed about 2 quarts in about 45 minutes. Going back for more tomorrow.

Asparagus is still going strong too.
Chantrell mushrooms should be starting up soon too.

This spring is one of the coolest that I can remember, the wild strawberries here are only beginning to blossom. There’s nothing like the taste of Woodland Strawberry. To bad they go to mush so fast. The tough little buggers aren’t cursed with the less taste better shelf life gene. I’ve never seen garden varieties making it in the real world, they just don’t seem to have the right stuff. Enjoy!

If you two are in the same house and you can't get samples, I guess that the Wilderness Survival Forum Quality Control Department will have to try harder.

My neighbor has a lot of those and he keeps telling me to go pick some / try transplanting some into my yard. Won't be long till they stop producing, these have been having fruits for about 6 weeks now. It's so dry here that they don't compare in size to the ones you have but they are very sweet.
    Nice haul!

Hey Amaranth, out of interest what was the soil/conditions around the strawberries like and how has it affected the taste? In Germany I found wild strawberries tasted very different depending upon where they grew, beyond more/less sugar/water. Hope you make some decent Jam/Liquor.

The first patch I picked from was down in a creek valley. Rich, black soil. Excellent fruit....large and semi sweet, good flavor. Limited sun exposure
The second patch was along a hillside. Red clay mainly. Again, large fruit but very sweet, intense flavor. Full sun exposure.
I've found them growing in so many different soil/sunlight conditions (heavy shaded valleys, karst fields, pasture land, river bottoms) so I just keep a sharp eye out while driving down the roads. I'm always surprised at how many people drive by, never noticing all the yummy food growing. Every year I loose a few patches when I show people whats in my baskets. lol

When should the Quality Control Department expect their samples (for testing purposes) to arrive? Remember - this is a service that we offer at no charge. We are your friends.

Thanks very much for the info Amaranth, great looking Jam! Store brought jam is just too sugary and without flavour for me, but yours looks perfect.
